An Altered Understanding of a Violent God

With all the continued shootings and mass killings that take place in America and around the world, it truly takes a toll on one’s mind and soul. It is deeply disturbing. In light of such, I have continued to ponder the ways of violence being contrary to what we know of God in Jesus, the Messiah.

The words in quotes below come from a man who was once a religious fundamentalist who used violence to get things done for his God.

One day, as he journeyed to violently kill others in the name of his God, his life was altered. He came to find out his violent concept of God was wrong and his message was, thus, changed forever.

My Review of N.T. Wright’s New Release

If you aren’t aware, N.T. Wright recently came out with a his newest release, The Paul Debate: Critical Questions for Understanding the Apostle. I appreciate Baylor Press sending a review copy to me! Wright continues to offer thoughts at the table of Pauline studies, this time as a response to the critiques of his massive work, Paul and the Faithfulness of God.

N.T. Wright Engages Critics

The Paul DebateThe man pops out books like no one else’s business. And he’s one of the few who is able to engage at both the scholarly and popular level.

As a colleague of mine recently remarked, no one can ever take up Pauline studies (or New Testament or Jesus studies, for that matter) from now on without pouring over Wright’s works. He’s done that much work and has had that much effect over the past few decades!

Well, he’s throwing another work into the masses, set to go live on October 1st of this year.

Three volumes have already been released over the past couple of decades. And now it seems that the next and fourth work will be released in 2013. It will come as 3 volumes itself, being entitled: Paul and the Faithfulness of God.

De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da in Romans 7

Everyone know The Police song, De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da? If not, you can have a listen and watch here.

Now Romans 7 is difficult enough just on its own terms. But add in the distraction of Sting belting out one of his great hits, well, it’s simply all over (especially after watching the video!).

Why Romans 7 and The Police?

Romans 7 is that chapter where Paul uses the word do so many times. Yes, that chapter! I count 20 times in vs15-20! There we find the famed words, ‘I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.’

Actually, did you know Romans 7 causes difficulty? Not because of The Police, but rather because people have been debating for a very long time whether Paul is describing the normal life of a Christian or non-Christian. Continue reading →
