First off, I’d like to thank the kind folk of IVP for a review copy of J.R. Briggs’ newest release, Fail: Finding Hope and Grace in the Midst of Ministry Failure. It’s always a pleasure to receive such gifts!
J.R. Briggs serves as Cultural Cultivator of The Renew Community, a Jesus community for skeptics and dreamers – based in Landsdale, PA. He also serves as Director of Leadership & Congregational Formation with The Ecclesia Network. Even more, he’s becoming most known for creating the Epic Fail Pastors Conference and now the penning of this new book.
Failure is not an easy word for pastors. Well, that’s probably true of most people! Of course, when many think of failure for pastors, their mind might typically imagine some grave moral failure. And, though, such is true at times, it is a small slice compared to the greater reality that pastors deal with concerning failure. Continue reading
Just this month, New Testament scholar, N.T. Wright, released his newest book to date: Surprised by Scripture. Wright continues to make more of his work available to a popular Christian audience, as opposed to his more weighty and academic works, such as his Christian Origins and the Question of God, currently a 4-volume and 3700+ page set (with 2 more volumes to be released at some point).
First off, I want to offer a special thank you to Renee Senogles, Publicity Manager at HarperOne. She was kind to send a review copy a couple of months back. I always appreciate kind publishers willing to make copies available for free in exchange for reviewing them on one’s blog. Thanks, Renee! Continue reading
Over the past few years, there has been a crop of up and coming authors that are serving as a voice for the younger evangelical church of America. I’ll let you, the reader, list your own that you prefer. However, one person whose name should be amongst that list is Jonathan Merritt, a faith and culture writer (see his blog) who has been recently named one of 30 leaders reshaping Christian leadership by Outreach Magazine.
Just a few weeks ago, his third release hit the shelves: Jesus Is Better Than You Imagined. I appreciated the review copy sent by FaithWords publishers. Thus, I share my brief review. Continue reading
Jonathan Merritt is a faith and culture writer who has been recently named one of 30 leaders reshaping Christian leadership by Outreach Magazine. I was introduced to Merritt through his first book, Green Like God. It led me to get connected more to his Religion News Services blog, ultimately leading to some conversations via social media and email.
Merritt’s newest publication is Jesus Is Better Than You Imagined, set to release on April 1, 2014. I appreciate the pre-release copy made available by the publisher, FaithWords. I plan to have a review up by the first weekend of April, so check back soon.
For an introduction to the book, check out the trailer. Continue reading
As I (and most other bloggers) do near the end of every year, here is a list of my top reads for 2013.
Actually, I’ve split the list into 2 groups of five books. The first 5 books are ones I completed this year. The second group consists of books I have not yet finished, but ones I am currently reading or have dipped into over the past months.
Where possible, I’ll leave links to my reviews so you can get a better glimpse of the books if desired. Continue reading
