In an effort to remember Hobbit day – or the day in which both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins were born – I thought I’d post a short video worth your watch. It’s a dramatized conversation that was to have taken place between J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis about myths. It was supposedly very instrumental in the conversion of C.S. Lewis.
I love myths, but the thing is we believe myths are lies, they are false (as Lewis argues in his dialogue with Tolkien). And, to that, I love Tolkien’s response:
Myths are not lies! Fact, they are the very opposite of a lie. Myths convey the essential truth, the primary reality of life itself.
I think Christians are thankful for Lewis’s conversion, as he became one of the great myth writers of the 20th century – conveying truth through story.
