A Thankful Heart Prepares the Way

MI0000258181Today, for Americans at home or abroad, this fourth Thursday of November marks Thanksgiving Day. The history of how America came to be is not so straightforward, in a pretty sense. Still, the day is set aside for us all to remember what we are thankful for.

Whenever I reflect of thankfulness, I’m drawn to a song from about 15 years ago. The title of the song is Come Fall on Us, hailing from the first Enter the Worship Circle CD. The two raw and earth bands, Waterdeep and 100 Portraits, have given us this collection of 15 songs. And Come Fall on Us is specifically based out of Psalm 50.

There is one particular line I have always loved from Come Fall on Us. It’s a call to a thankful heart:

A thankful heart prepares the way for you, my God.

Simple, yet profound.

There are various things we could speak of that open our lives to the intimate work of God: humility, servant-hearts, strong community of believers, etc. But this aspect of a thankful heart truly does prepare the way for the Lord. It turns our hearts toward the work of God in all things.

As a friend once pointed out, we are told not only to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thess 5:18), but also to give thanks for everything (Eph 5:20), which, I gather, means give thanks for all circumstances.

That’s a tough one in many ways.

So, in our reflections before the Lord, let us cultivate a thankful heart. Such is a high calling for God’s people.

      • This a copy n paste from my Facebook page.:

“OOPS LOL!!! I’m backing up my server. It won’t be available for probably another hour or hour and a half. The thanksgiving piece from father George (and everything else) will be inaccessible during that time. That was dumb. Post a piece and then take the server offline. Well, it’s gotta be done sometime.”
