Richard Foster on the Communion of the Saints

Working my way through Richard Foster’s Freedom of Simplicity, last week I read these introductory words to his chapter entitled Simplicity Among the Saints:

History has a wonderful way of freeing us from the cult of the contemporary. It opens to us rich new vistas of “the communion of saints.” We realize more pointedly than ever before that God has spoken in the past, and that we are not the only ones who have sought to live in faithful conformity to his word…Such experiences have a way of destroying all contemporary arrogance.
